VIETNAM’S LONGEST BAY BRIDGE SUPPORTED BY JAPANESE TECHNOLOGY
Hello!
My name is Saito, one of the freshmen of this year 2016.
I was hired for the position of Civil Engineering Technical staff.
After joining the company last April, the freshmen spent one month in the Tokyo Headquarter for group training, then we held an On-the-Job Training (OJT) at project sites until the end of September.
We were divided into a group of two or three; each group would partake in an OJT at three different projects in Japan. For each project, we stayed for about 1 month and a half. And for the third and last project, a few of the members were given the opportunity to be trained outside of Japan in an overseas project.

This time, the overseas OJT was held in Lach Huyen Project, located in Hai Phong, Vietnam. Four of the freshmen trainees were given the opportunity, including myself. (The four persons starting from the left in the above photo are the trainees.) During the time that we arrived, the bridge work was already on-going, including the construction of longest bay bridge in Vietnam. This bridge is a part of an access road connecting between new international port and highway linking Hai Phong and Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam.
Five hours later after departing from Japan, we finally arrived at our accommodation facility in Hai Phong where we will be staying during the training. First thing that surprised me was the size of the facility. It was a 7-storey hotel and the entire building was rented to accommodate the 40 project staffs, including the Japanese, Vietnamese and other staffs from associated Asian countries. The top floor offers a panoramic view of the city.

Our training began the following morning, by attending the morning meeting which promptly starts at 6:45AM!
Starting the work this early in the morning is a part of the counter measure taken against the extremely high temperature during the daytime. The morning meetings are carried in Vietnamese, and then followed by translation into English. This is because workers either only understand Vietnamese or English. So it takes up twice the time as it would normally take.

In this project, "Span-by-Span Erection Method" is utilized which is also the first time to be applied in Vietnam. This method uses a precast segment that is prefabricated in the precast yard inside the premise. So in a sense, it looks like an assembly yard of bridges rather than a construction site. The site area of the precast yard is 10 hectares which is about 2.1 times of the Tokyo Dome!

The project is at its peak of construction, mobilizing approximately 1,250 staffs and workers. At the site, I found many construction machinery I don't normally see in Japan.

Inside the site office, it has a vibrant atmosphere; conversations fly lively in multiple languages such as Japanese, English and Vietnamese.
Thus, we also tried to speak to them in English despite of the struggle with the technical terms. The project team is a multinational team of members from various countries such as Japan, Vietnam and Philippines, so they are trying their best to work together and aim for one goal, through activities like creating a T-shirt with a print of their construction site and wearing them.

A month and a half of training passed us by quickly and living abroad has brought us new discoveries each day. Especially how amazingly beautiful it was to watch the sunset at the end of the day after work. There were some difficult times now and then, but I am proud to have been able to work as a member of this large scale national project.
